The Map and the Compass: Why You Are Not Your Personality

Have you ever had one of those moments where you stop and realise you've been moving through your day, perhaps even your life, on a kind of autopilot?

It's that feeling of looking in the mirror and wondering where the you inside went. We often mistake our personality for who we truly are. We say "I'm a helper," or "I'm a protector." But there is a quiet, vital difference between our personality, the strategy we've used to navigate the world - and our essence.

In my practice, I see the Enneagram as a Map. It shows us the well-worn paths of our personality. But a map alone doesn't tell us how to move. For that, we need a Compass.

The Mirror of Art Therapy

If the Enneagram is the Map, Art Therapy may be the Compass that helps us find our way back to our centre.

When we talk about our challenges, we tend to stay in the logical, analytical parts of our brain - primarily the Left Hemisphere. This is often where our personality’s defences are strongest; we are very good at explaining ourselves away, justifying or rationalising why we do what we do.

Artists hands covered in colourful paint, resting on denim. Paintbrushes, red, blue, paint jars, and a painting are in the background. Creative mood.

But when we pick up a brush or a pastel, we engage the Right Hemisphere. This part of the brain speaks in images, symbols, and emotions rather than linear logic.

The defences we use in conversation don't quite know how to translate to the paper. Because art-making taps into this more non-verbal, somatic space, our subconscious has a way of "leaking" into the work. You might not have the words for the tension you're carrying, but a certain shape or a heavy choice of colour can make it visible.

In our sessions, we aren't looking to distance ourselves from these parts. We are looking for integration. It’s about seeing the patterns on the paper and gently acknowledging, "I see how you've been trying to protect me." This awareness is the first step toward bringing those hidden parts into the light.

The Homecoming

There is a quiet shift that often unfolds when someone moves from their personality, the survival mask - back into their Essence.

It isn't always a loud "aha!" moment. Often, it’s more tentative. It’s a physical release; a long-overdue exhale that allows the shoulders to drop. For some, it feels like a sudden absence of that chronic tightness in the chest, or a heart that feels just a little less defended. It’s a breath of fresh air. It feels like coming home to yourself.

When we find that compass, we stop just reacting to the world with our personality patterns, and start being.

Exploring Your Map

If you feel like you’ve been living according to a map that no longer fits, I would love to walk with you as you find your own way home.

I offer 1:1 sessions at the Lotus Room in Brighton and online, where we use the Enneagram and Art Therapy to explore these patterns with curiosity and care. If you're ready to look into the mirror and see what’s waiting there, you can book a session or a brief discovery chat via the link below.
